Lab Technician Intern

Reports to Laboratory Services Manager

 

A. Overall Role

To provide the highest quality laboratory testing service possible for the clients.

 

B.  Essential Responsibilities

1.       Prepare materials for testing.

2.       Sterilize and clean glassware and work areas, disposing of potential pathogenic and biohazardous materials appropriately.

3.       Maintain accurate records of tests performed.

4.       Read, record, and file reports.

5.       Ensure that all supplies are stored in appropriate and safe locations.

6.       Operate, maintain, calibrate, and sterilize laboratory equipment.

7.       Perform specialized or routine standardized tests on environmental specimens.

8.       Follow all safety practices according to the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

9.       Maintain inventory of chemicals, glassware, and other supplies.

10.    Other duties as needed.

 

C.  Working Conditions and Environment

Lab Technicians work almost exclusively in the laboratory environment.  Understanding the safe use of hazardous materials and potentially pathogenic organisms is required.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.  He/she must frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds or more. 

 

D. Education and Experience

1.       Minimum

High School Diploma or GED and pursuing a degree in a physical science or related field

2.       Preferred

Associates Degree or higher in a physical science or related field, and/ or experience with laboratory duties.

Job Responsibilities:

Responsibility to perform a number of routine laboratory operations, such as:

o Test chemical samples using spectrophotometry, refractive index, Karl Fischer titrations, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, gravimetric analysis equipment and other analytical techniques.

o Prepare samples using chemical treatment and distillations

o Perform process and product quality control tests using above method

o Communicate test results to production personnel

o Responsibility to perform instrument calibrations as scheduled

o Responsibility to follow procedures as written and to alert QA/QC management of any deviations to procedures.

o Responsibility to use Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to collect, organize, and report QC test data.

o Responsibility to interpret data from standard procedures.

o Promote, participate in, and support Six Sigma and HOS cultures.

o Support Kaizen teams as requested.

o Authority to prevent the use of non-conforming raw materials, in-process samples, and finished product.

o Authority to prevent the use of non-conforming equipment and standards

o Assist on special projects and miscellaneous job tasks as assigned

o Coordinate priorities with Shift Leaders to improve productivity

o Responsibility to follow safety and housekeeping standards

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: 

o Bachelor’s degree in science discipline or 3+ years experience in a high volume production lab.

 

Additional Qualifications:

o Ability to perform >70% of procedures listed on Lab Technician Training Grid

o Bachelors degree in Chemistry is preferred

o Ability to work with a minimum of supervision

o Proficiency in LIMS & Data Acquisition Systems

o Effective verbal and communication skills

o Team Player and excellent interpersonal skills

o GMP experience – good manufacturing practices experience is preferred.

o Computer proficiency in WORD, ACCESS, & EXCEL, experience with LIMS
